The Election Process has begun!

Five years have passed from when the ruins of Osrona have risen, and the first Election for the third member of the triumvirate has begun. The streets of Osrona begin to line themselves with people at desks, assisting with the registration process for voting, and those who wish to run for office are encouraged to give a speech to the public of why they should be voted for. The campaigning lasts for two years.
Good luck Osronan Candidates!

Quote:
Ooc: People who wish to run for the position of Elected must perform a speech, and must post it on this thread by the end of 1745AC. Once 1746AC rolls around, people may vote for which candidate they believe would be the best Elected. The results will be announced in 1747AC.

Apropos of nothing, a Teraphim takes the stage; Tieru Avlee.

Quote:Six years ago, my people bartered with your people to lay down your arms and denounce witchcraft that today has threatened to take your entire world from you.

Alexander Petrakis spoke for you and denied the wish.

What followed was a bloody war that took the lives of my kin. Of your kin.

Families, lineages, dynasties. All driven into nothingness under the power of my people and what stands now is no divine right of kings--but a ruler of your choosing.

I stand here as a murderer of your people. As a solider of an occupying force.

As your savior.

I come fresh from destroying the Meteor summoned by your late queen Nebula Petrakis. I stand here the sole candidate that can say they are above mortal men in mental acuity.

All who will stand here and argue that they are right to lead have the same flaw:

They are not immune to the crafty nature of witches.

I am.
Deep within my mind is an auger set, tunneling thoughts and deflecting outside influences from my mind. I can be no Alexander Petrakis, his mind torn from hexes. I can be no Walter Dorco, a hex upon him driving his blade at friends instead of foe. I stand here a grander man then them.
My people have done grave deeds within Osrona, but we have purged witches where they go. Your current lives are to be thanked for our efforts in slaying Nebula Petrakis during her wicked ritual.
I am your only candidate for salvation against witches.
I am your strongest candidate to see your lives continued.
Do not make the mistake of the loyalists in clinging to the past. Change has come, and it comes with me."

Jack Kelsey hesitates and decides to participate in elections

Quote:Hello Osrona. You may know me, but I definitely know the city. Because I have lived here all the time, since my arrival to this land.
I did not leave it when it was in ruins, when most of it dwellers either died in fight or fled. I am here now, when the city was rebuilt. You may know me because I gladly helped those who are in need. You know it, I had a job for everyone: be it watering crops, or assistance in delivery of wares, or collecting valuable supplies for me - for some reward.

I believe in a bright future of Shimmering city, a future in the age of peace and prosperity. At the very beginning, I want to construct a memorial to fallen heroes of war. I see it as a place where one can read names of warriors from both sides. I acknowledge that life has the highest value for me, and I view the memorial as a place of reconciliation. I don't have blood on me, I believe in world of peace.

You may know my creed - "I am friendly to you, AND you are friendly to me. I trust you, AND you trust me". I based my enterprise on it, and I am going to follow it after being elected.

Osrona should be a safe place for everyone - visitor from any town or village will be allowed to stay safely there, if he respects a creed and Osronian Law. I don't appreciate occult magic, but I believe that person should be judged by their deeds, but not by their choice of magical school. Evil nature and activities of Witches and demons, for example, are well known.

If you agree to respect the New Osrona - I believe that you are welcome to stay there. I am going to stop persecution of people from ancient noble families, such as Petrakis, Pelleaux, Grimmore, Astor. I wish you to return at our city and live there as a citizen of New Osrona. Those who assault you because of your lineage will be stopped by City Watch and the Law.

The Law of Osrona is to be used, but it could be detailed, and even modernized. For example, I offer to add an entry that cutting trees in Osrona is percieved as vandalism; it should not be tolerated.

I believe that Osrona can be a place which can give enough produce for nearby lands. I believe that Osrona will become a recreation center of the land, it is so  close to sea.

So lets build a bright future of Shimmering city together, following Creed Of Peace and Law Of Osrona.

A familiar rat dressed to the nines in his finest suit enters the center of New Osrona, straightening his tie before delivering an impromptu speech. It's Yersin, of course, the ever shady self-proclaimed champion of democracy.

Quote:Didn't think I'd be takin' the stand, but I wouldn't be doin' Oz right by leavin' it with the candidates it has now. No offense t'my runnin' mates, keh.

I don't think I gotta tell most of ya what I've done for this city, what my Family's done, 'specially ya'll from Suds, but I suppose a refresher never hurts. We always kept our part of town safe from th'hardheads of th'Order who liked t'use us slummers as practice, cuttin' down Rhoynish kids fer fun and such. And during Finnie's little mandated massacre we kept Suds as safe as we could, Walt and Ro givin' it their all to keep as many of us lowborn safe from the folly of powerful assholes.

Since then, I've helped t'rebuild it. T'guard it. And I always protect my investments. And I'm not talking about th'city, I'm talking about the freedoms you've been granted. That we've all been granted. Fer centuries this city's been enslaved t'the Petrakis lineage, and whatever sycophants sucked up enough t'gain the royals' 'blessing'. Stealin' the wealth of the people, treatin' us as their property, using us all as battlefield fodder in their egotistical games of grand strategy.

But that ain't the case anymore. The future's in our hands. And together, we're gunna make it all fer us. We got a new generation filled with talent and drive, and I'm gunna do my best to make sure they get everything they need. A proper workshop fer th'Task collective and their research towards alchemical advancement and replication of Barsburg tech comes first, with finally reopenin' th'Academy as a possible goal if there's enough support fer it. And of course, rebuildin' our merchant fleet and shiftin' our focus towards international trade to continue bringin' prosperity to Oz.

As fer th'rumors surroundin' me? My so-called 'reputation'? I say let my actions speak for me, not th'claims of my enemies. An' speakin' of those enemies, I don't want anyone to worry. I know many don't wish any further war, or conflict. Too many threats as it is, and we got families split between here and Nysea regardless. As a representative of th'people, I'll keep my little crusade personal. Unless th'people's voices cry out otherwise, those glorified slavers can live fer another day.

S'all I got t'say. Make yer choice, folks.

When questioned about his competitors, Yersin commented that while he appreciated Tieru's 'tinfoil hat platform', a racial supremacist who claims that the city should have been 'cleansed' more probably isn't the best fit for Elected. As for Jack, the rat merely states he believes in 'good sportsmanship' and won't 'break any bones for his spouted drivel'.

Feeling the heat, some tabloid papers begin circulating with propaganda upon them!
Photos, some real, some very obviously edited take center stage within the publications...

A picture of Tieru and a garbed executioner begin to circulate, the man's identity obscured. Did he really exist...?

"My name's Barbossa and I work at the execution block! Candidate Tieru promises me job security and that's more then I say for the others! He's got my vote!"

Quote:

A picture of Tieru and a local youth! Who was this jovial boy...?

"I'm Lil Sammy but my friends call me Sudsey because I'm from Sudbury! I want Tieru to win because he's cool and strong and I wish he was my dad!"

Quote:[Image: 0753aba545.png]

Oh my! A poorly edited picture of both Tieru Avlee and Jane Kelsey find itself within the backpages of a magazine of ill-repute!

"I'm Jane Kelsey, wife of candidate Jack Kelsey, and I support Tieru! He's a real man and I feel safe when he's around!"

Under each page-spread is a caption in very light, fine text:
The above endorsement is not affiliated with 'Tieru Avlee for Councilman' in any shape or form. This is an independent organization's efforts to do what is right for Osrona.
With disclaimers like that, it must be true!

Shortly after the confirmation of Candidate Yersin's untimely death, Vigilant Malia Arsali takes the stage. She delivers a brief but impassioned speech, and provides pamphlets to all those interested, as well as making sure they're posted around the city, prepared to replaster them if they're taken down by enemies of democracy.

Quote:"I wasn't supposed ta be here, now. I trusted that Yersin was tha best candidate for Osrona. He wasn't a perfect man, by any means, but any who knew him, truly knew him, knew he cared deeply about tha people of Osrona. His death is a tragedy, and I truly hope his murderer gets what's comin' to 'em."

"My name is Malia of Clan Arsali. I'm a Rhoynish woman who hails from the Tribelands. I ain't the typical person you'd expect standing here, makin' a speech. Honestly, I didn't expect it myself. But here I am, and I'mma tell ya why I reckon ya should vote for me."

"I was the first person to volunteer to join the Vigilant Watch. First person to be promoted to Patrolwoman, to Vigilant, all based off my competency, and how much I cared 'bout Osrona. I've spent tha years since the Sack doin' my best for the people o' Osrona."

"I wasn't here for tha war. I didn't take part in the sack. I came afterwards, and helped rebuild along with many of ya, moving rubble and the like to help this city repair itself, because I believe in the Democratic ideal it represents. I'm standin' here, because I reckon that while I might not be the most accomplished, or the longest known, I AM someone who's shown they care for Osrona."

"So, let me elaborate on my intent in office. If I'm elected, I'm gonna do my best to reform the government into one truly democratic, and the city into one where even people from the lowest means can have a say in the city's governing if they put the effort in to show that they care, that they're dedicated to Osrona. I've a small pamphlet that demonstrates this intent, which I'll post around the city for review."

"Now, let me talk 'bout the other candidates. I hold 'em no ill will, neither of 'em, but ya deserve to hear what I think 'bout 'em. I don't know much 'bout Tieru Avlee but what he's said about himself, and I reckon thats damning enough. He took active part in the sack, and while I'm sure he regrets his part, I don't reckon that excuses his actions enough that he's the right person to govern ya. He's an occultist, as well. I ain't gonna judge on personal life choices, but we all know that magic like that does things ta the mind. And, furthermore, he has no plans he's admitted! His main qualifiers, in his speech, is that he helped destroy the Meteor that threatened Esshar, and that he's immune to the influence of witches. See, on the first account, so did I. And on the second, so what? If elected, I'll freely submit myself to whatever reasonable tests are required to ensure my mind remains my own. I promise ya that."

"Jack Kelsey is a different story. He talks a lot about never leaving the city, but I've never even SEEN the man! He wants ta let the same people that drove this city to ruin back within it! Now, so long as they acknowledge they're just regular residents, and that the concept of 'nobility' is outdated an' counter to our democratic ideals, I ain't got no problem with 'em livin' here, but the idea they're persecuted for belonging to their families, and not because they're often still loyal to the old regime is ridiculous, ta me. When it comes down ta it, I ain't seen him doing his part for the city. Maybe we're just always at the wrong place at the wrong time. Maybe not."

"A vote for me is a vote fer an Osrona that don't bow to the whims of the Royalists. Unless the people wish it, I ain't gonna court war with Nysea, but neither am I gonna stand back and let 'em terrorise the populace without consequences! The Coalition is tha future, I ain't gonna push for secession neither, in case anyone's afraid'a that. In the end, my goal's simple: Keep Osrona democratic, give the power to tha people, and keep the people safe!"

"I reckon ultimately you'll make yer own choices, but don't settle for the people who don't deserve ya, yeah? Vote for the one who's doing what they can to make sure they do. Thanks."

The Pamphlet appears the be a declaration of intent for extensive reform, something most of those who know the Vigilant might be quite surprised about, given she's never shown previous affinity with political philosophy.

Quote:
Arsali Election Pamphlet

Malia Arsali presents these as the intended reforms should she be elected for office:

Government:
  • Laws are proposed by the Triumvirs as 'bills'. If a majority of Triumvirs vote in favour of a bill, it passes to the floor of the citizens, where it may be debated on and then voted upon by the attending Citizens, with a majority deciding on the bill's passage. Everyone has the right to speak on the merits or lack-thereof of a bill.
  • The Triumvir of the People is elected every six years by popular vote. So long as someone can provide evidence of residence in Osrona, they may vote for People's Triumvir. The runner up for the position is given the role of 'People's Tribune'. The People's Tribune is granted the singular ability to propose bills on behalf of the people, and requires only one Triumvir to vote in favour for it to pass to the floor.
  • Any Triumvir or People's Tribune may be removed from office by two thirds majority vote of the citizenry if a vote of no confidence is proposed and seconded by two citizens. This may not be vetoed.
  • Tear down the Castle and build a public forum instead to serve as the centre of government, and as the Floor of the Citizens.
Citizenship:
  • Formally abolish nobility. Replace it instead with the concept of Citizenship.
  • An Osronan resident may gain citizenship by being born to two citizens, or by serving in a government state sanction organisation for three years/achieving a 'third tier' rank (i.e. Vigilant in the Vigilant Watch), whichever comes first. The Church of Three and the Vigilant Watch are two such organisations. Also, I propose a third organisation based around Crafters and Medics that would have this status. The Triumvirate may declare a guild state-sanctioned by unanimous vote.
  • Only Citizens may stand for office as the Triumvir of the People.
  • Citizens have the right to vote on bills that are not deemed 'emergency measures', but are not required to excercise it. Voting is thus encouraged, but optional.
Triumvirate:
  • Veto granted to individual members of triumvirate based on their area of specialisation; i.e. Commander may veto attempts to declare war, and the like. Veto is a stopping motion that lasts for one year, then the motion may be made again. One veto per triumvir per two years. The same motion cannot be vetoed twice.
  • Triumvirs may designate bills as 'Emergency Measures'; in this case they are ony voted on by the Triumvirs themselves. A Triumvir may only put forwards one Emergency measure per term, except for during the circumstances immediately below.
  • In a time where regular voting would risk the safety and security of the state, the Triumvirs may put forwards a motion to institute Martial Law. In this, every bill proposed is considered an emergency bill. Martial law lasts for two years, at which point it ends or may be extended by vote of the citizenry. At the end of a period of Martial Law, all Triumvirs stand for re-election immediately.

Legal:
  • A rewrite of the former Osronan Crown Law to establish set terms of imprisonment or value of fines for crimes. Additions or removal of crimes on a case-by-case basis, or to better fit within the terms of the Essharan Constitution. This would be done with the assistance of the Commander of the Vigilant watch for all laws, and the Stellus of the Church of Three both where the laws regards crimes of religion; i.e. heresy, and in terms of 'compassionate' sentencing.
  • The institution of the right of advocacy by a member of the Church of Three in cases of crimes considered Major or Capital.
  • The institution of the right for a criminal convicted of a minor crime that results in jailtime to instead request to serve their sentence with the church performing charitable duties.

It's that time again.

The Election process begins after four years, in the year 1751. A year will be taken for candidates for the election to make their election speeches, and announce their candidacy for the Magistrate position. In 1752, citizens of Osrona will vote for one of the candidates, and in 1753, the candidate who receives the most votes will become the second Magistrate of the Osronan Republic.

Good luck, Osronan candidates.

A sharply dressed felinae will be running for Magistrate.

In a split second E.L was on the stage and ready to give his speech but whatever confrontation was going on between Walter and the two other people caught his focus. "Hey excuse me what the fuck?" But eventually he got into the right state of mind for his speech. "Now, i know i may not be the most known but that's okay. My name is E.L and i am one of your candidates for Magistrate." He stood as proud as one could in the stage, his golden shades being the one thing that obscured his focus of the people before him. "I may not even be the best speaker but i will try my best to get the point across." text wall time

Immediately he moved onto his first promise with a tone that was booming with confidence on the face that was far more than determined..

"One of the things i've noticed is the shortage of Vigilant Watch members running around and keeping the people safe, why is that? I blame it on the high mortality rate that comes with the job and do you know why that is? I say it's because of low morale that comes with such a job. I believe that increased pay could motivate some to join."

The golden shades that were slowly sliding off with every word and promise given by the felinae ere pushed back up onto his face.

"I plan on bringing artificers and alchemists to help with them in their protection of our city. If needed, i will work to raise a base of operations for the Vigilant Watch or whatever else they request."

"Mind you, all of this will be coming out of my pocket but no worry because any money to help is absolutely worth it." It would hurt his pockets and business but business is always about giving people things they need.

"But hell, i could be completely wrong about this and going the wrong way about it and if there's a better way, just say so." A less confident, more reserved tone accompanied his last words on the Watch. "Nothing short of my best will be given to assist."

The stern look relaxed and his original tone at the start of the speech returned. "Too many stalls have been occupied by those merchants who've been at it for years and building mountains of coin with little to no competition. The question is not when will they croak, but when will the newer up and coming artificers, alchemists, gatherers and adventurers or whatever you want to call it finally get a chance to open up their own shop?" Steel hues looked around the people to see their reactions.

"Any funds acquired after most of my promises have been fulfilled, whether it be out of my pocket or from a donation will be used to build stalls and low priced ones at that." It was something that would appeal to many people who had never been given the chance to get their shops or names out there.

"The Church will be asked to work with those hunting demons to bless their weapons and provide medical aid to those wounded in the defense of our Shimmering City. It will show that those who are willing to bleed for in the battle against the demons will be supported in their endeavors." After all that time, the issue he cared about the most came.

"No matter what the current issue we have is, demons will always be present and choosing to do their absolute best to annihilate regardless of faction or reputation until they are dealt with. Whether it be from wiping them out or forcing them to leave some other way." Under the golden frame of his shades, a felinae disgusted with how the very thing he despised most was running free. The disdain reflected in his speech.

"They are creatures born of helheim with their only purpose to take from you, to rip away those loved ones you cherish and to cut you, burn you and rip you apart until the world is nothing but their own desecrated land, plagued with corruption and it's spawn running rampant."

"We need to gather as much manpower as we can to deal with the demonic threat whether it be from the Watch, Church, concerned citizens, or even guilds dedicated to fighting evil." With his righteous hatred and stance on demons known, his face relaxed into an almost warming smile. "A good example for those fighting evil is the Giants guild, every encounter i've had with them was with their fight against demons near our city. Now, why are those demons near our city, maiming or capturing those unfortunate enough to come into their view? When did we become so splintered to have it be a danger to travel outside the walls of our glorious city?" A deep sorrow washed over him. How could they have become threatened by something that should have been stomped out years ago? "I'm not sure how long ago it was but i will work to bring this age of demons terrorizing our people to an end."

There were many people who had done unforgettable atrocities to the people of Osrona and one he hadn't forgotten was the creatures who saw themselves fit to lord over their percieved lessers. "Speaking of terrozing our people, let us not forget the teraphim. Now, i could go on a rant about how those teraphim torched the entire place we called home and attempted to genocide every single one of us before replacing our horrible rule and then walking out as if nothing had happened. I would love to see them pay in blood or coin but it would be a poor idea to fight them and their allies with the demons running amok."
Legally dickless.
