This isn't an update, rather a fun adventure throughout the history of the Esshar map. Multiple iterations of Eternia have taught us that a smaller map is generally better. You can in this GIF, see the fat slowly cut off Esshar in the 3 major iterations.
I suppose I should explain -why- a smaller map is generally better. Made brief as possible, this is because the more people you cram into a smaller area, the more likely it is that these people will interact. Yes, with a larger map you have a greater area to explore, but the chance of interaction between characters who would have never meet is greatly reduced.
You don't necessarily want a world where everybody knows everybody, but a smaller map helps prevent spurious plotlines that tax the administration. If you can narrow the number of plotlines down, you can effectively make each critical plot more interesting to the people in general.
This naturally is just my opinion on things, and is by no means the reason these things have been done.
