I've heard a lot of complaints that active vampires seem to be bite-crazy and are biting "when they don't need to be," but when you're on the other side and can see the costs it doesn't seem unreasonable at all; you need a lot of blood to get anything done, exponentially so the more mouths you have to feed.
I second this. Since vampires desperately need blood, they're forced to act a certain kind of way and thus can't be your stereotypical twilight vampire! They're natural antagonists and every people they bite is a possible revenge storyline plot create against themselves.
