iirc the plan is that the actually cool stances people acquire while playin are mostly signature spells. Things like flashsword or w/e, you need to specialize in that stance and be mentored into it/apply for it rather than it taking a slot.

The master stances being available for a mastery token as an option I think was there in case you happened to pick a tree with no mastery token spell, you could just pick up a stance early without needing to app for it/find a mentor.

Or at least i remember a convo like this happening
