In all honesty Stances may be boring but they do make a difference. They're, sometimes, just them, the flashy spell you'd need to win fights. I don't mind them costing a Mastery point at all because they, like every other mastery spell, represent a milestone of one's character combat capability. It's your fluff to Roleplay a Master Martial Artist, etc.
