The phrase 'institutional memory' describes the capacity of large organizations, such as state organs, military orders, and religious establishments, to maintain a body of knowledge through the collected efforts of its constituent parts. While no individual may remember a given piece of data, the institution as a whole will, come what may, know what must be known.

There are few greater disasters in history than the loss of institutional memory. There were fewer losses of institutional memory greater than that caused by the collapse of the Azraelite Alliance of Valmasia, some centuries ago. The entire continent became a ruin, compared to its former self: so much knowledge of magic and technology; culture and art; people and life was lost.

Fortunately, things that are lost can be found again. Even if you need to search through mountains of ash--even the smallest scrap of information thought taken by the ages can make a crucial difference for the future.
