"[$^&*%&)*$*], you trust us, don't you? I'm your [*()$@!] after all, right?" she said, her eyes shining in an amber greed. The words were course and rough, yet his memory could not provide a more silky and smooth voice. He yearned for it once more, to grasp this dirty, thorny rose no matter how his hands bled and rotted.

"H-Here. He's yours. Give it to me then!" she turned to a dark robed man, letting me go. The robed man took my wrist and gripped it till it bled. I didn't care, I still looked at her... no, I suppose I never did truly see. I simply *%$^ her...

No matter. She never looked at back at me since then.

The robed man tossed a satchel as as I was yanked away. The wind blew as she tripped, failing to catch it. The contents of the cheap satchel spilled out, clanking amidst the sandstone.

There were nothing but 5 coins.

I reached out to her, but she didn't look towards me.

I saw her look the way she did all those years ago, her amber eyes reflected the dull gold of those coins.
-----------------------------------

We had been walking for 2 round moons now, the robed men showed their dissatisfaction again and again, hitting and whipping us, as the cargo became smaller and smaller. They stopped after a while, at the same time they no longer fed us. We continued walking, the animals had long been butchered, the stars refused to show up in the night sky, and there were nothing else but the rags on our backs and the chains clanking against the sand.

"We'll be free... I know it... the lights tell me," [#@%$^(&*] said, the girl's dry voice quietly whispered against the dark desert sky, "They say... there's a city blessed with life... with a giant golden cactus... but without the prickly bits... and even beyond that... the sands become black... and full of bugs... and flowers grow everywhere..."

Every now and then, one of us will go missing at night.
Every now and then, the robed men ate meat in the morning.

"I'll see it all... without these chains. One day. We'll see them..."

A star seemed to shine just a bit for her, before those clouds hid the jeweled sky again. Still, her eyes were much brighter than those stars.

When I woke up, the [#@%$^(&*] wasn't there anymore.
When I woke up, the robed men were eating meat.

The days past and I was the only one left. We kept on walking.

The skies cleared and the men rejoiced, but I alone saw her star shining with a fury.
The wind blew hard that night, and the fates carried with them a man. There was commotion but he covered my eyes and the wind sung.

Everything soon turned quiet.

The robed men weren't there anymore. Red water dripped where he walked.

He apologized to me. I looked at him. I didn't know why he was doing that.

If anything, I only wished I could've been freed with the her.
------------------------------------

"I'm sorry," [&*()^&%*] apologized again.

I looked down at him, I didn't know why he did that. He sat upon the sands, there was only a wry smile left of him. His clothes were clotted red and dry, as he became increasingly slow. The skies has opened up but we were too slow.

"[$^&*%&)*$*], I taught you a bit how to read this book, right?"

I nodded.

"Then this... follow this star... okay?"

I nodded.

"You... wanted to see the world... you told me, right?"

I nodded.

"Hehe... Me too... me too... so I'll need you... to do a favor for me, will you? See it... for me as well."

I nodded.

"Write me... something like this... book... and let... me... read it..."

I...

He closed his eyes and smiled. The winds blew and his body became covered in sands.

...I nodded.

The book flittered against the desert winds. I squinted my eyes at the worn ink, to see that star he pointed to.

"...[&*()^$&$]-...?" though I tried, I couldn't remember how he said it. I gave up.

There was only the whistling of the wind. It blew where I needed to go, and I walked. He had enough for one more day, and one more day was enough for me. The stars faded and the sun rose against a golden tree upon the horizon. The wind sighed in relief and whispered to me. He corrected me a bit for my attempts back then.

I squinted at the disintegrating book, the worn ink markings upon that star he told me to follow.

"R-Regalus...? Did I say it right?"

The wind flew beyond my reach, heading towards that tree... I chased after it but it left me behind...

He left me behind.

...

I suppose everyone will, sooner or later.
