On Asking Why
To ask of oneself “Why?”—
what greater cruelty may there be?
Why am I thus?
Why has it failed?
Why…
For “why” yields no answer;
it only deepens the wound,
and gives a sharper voice
to the silent plea for rescue
from that which slowly consumes the soul.
Then let me, this day,
abandon such questions—!
for I shall never answer them.
Instead, I shall speak thus:
I am as I am.
